Los Banos, Merced County
Los Banos means the baths, a name taken from the creek pools where a mission priest stopped to bathe on his trips into the valley in the early 1800s. Cattle baron Henry Miller, whose ranches stretched across the West, laid out the present town when the railroad arrived in 1889. The May Day Fair he started is still held each spring.
